Join us for a discussion about matriarchy, Islam, Modernity and the dynamics of Minangkabau history with Jeffrey Hadler, an associate professor and Chair of the Center for Southeast Asia Studies at U.C. Berkeley and author of Sengketa Tiada Putus: Matriarkat, Reformisme Agama, dan Kolonialisme di Minangkabau.

The talk will conclude with a broader discussion of cholarly trends in Indonesian Studies in the US over the past decade and Berkeley's leadership in (and resistance to) some of these trends.
